Brief Overview from Presentation for CVS on 3D print Guns
The FP-45 Liberator was the first 3D printed Gun by Defense Distributed. It was designed by George Hyde - This gun is a cheap single shot pistol created in 2013. The design is now widely available online.
Fifteen of the gun's sixteen functional parts are made of plastic. Its body can be printed overnight, and a new barrel printed in a few hours.
This here is a CAD file for the gun's body. This 3D printed gun arose issues of gun control.
Layers of ABS plastic was used to create components like the spring which is shown here - File sharing presents public safety risks from unqualified gun seekers to obtain or manufacture 3D printed guns. In 2013 amendments to Undetectable Firearms Act gun control laws were being introduced making it illegal to print guns made of all plastic. This would help enforce a piece metal being inserted into the gun to allow guns to be detected in a metal detector. However online distribution of these digital has been difficult to control.
Solid Concepts (in Austin TX), is one of the world leaders in 3D Printing services, has manufactured the world’s first 3D Printed Metal Gun using a laser sintering process and powdered metals. The gun nicknamed ‘Reason’, is of a 1911 classic design, which functions smoothly and has already handled 50 rounds of successful firing.
Where are we at now? PrintedFirearm.com is a website devoted to 3D printing of guns has announced that one of its members successfully developed a Colt CM901 rifle, crafted on a XYZ Da Vinci printer, with thermoplastic. This rifle costs around $500 and can fire NATO rounds of ammunition.
